Sunday sees no let up in rush; long queues outside banks, ATMs

New Delhi, Nov 13 (PTI): There was no let up in the rush for exchanging demonetised notes and withdrawing money with many people spending their Sunday queueing up outside banks and ATMs since early morning hours, even as some of the outlets were shut after being short on cash.

Delhiites started forming serpentine queues as early as 6 AM outside ATMs and banks to try to get cash. Security has been beefed up outside bank branches as people struggling to buy daily items lined up to get Rs 100 currency notes.

Yesterday, there were rumous of stampede, of people plundering goods from a mall in Seelampur, following which police asked citizens not to spread such rumours and warned of strict action.

"Since it's a Sunday, we are expecting more crowd outside banks and ATMs. We have made adequate security arrangements to ensure no untoward incident occurs," said a senior police official.

To manage anxious crowds, as many as 3,400 personnel of paramilitary and Delhi Police along with 200 quick reaction teams have been deployed at ATMs and banks to keep the situation under control.

"I didn't get a chance to exchange the banned Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes as I was working. But today is my off day and so I rushed to the bank only to find a huge crowd of people waiting for their turn to come. The crowd is swelling by the hour," said Mohit Jha, a resident of Vikaspuri.

A 71-year-old Roopak Das said he had a harrowing time yesterday running from one ATM to another to withdraw money.

"I visited a number of ATMs to withdraw money yesterday but none of them were operational. I'm old and there is nobody at my home who can withdraw money on my behalf. I'm finding this extremely difficult. Today I woke up early and reached the ATM but then were was a long queue. I just hope that I am able to withdraw money today," Das said.

Another elderly resident expressed his frustration saying he was completely out of cash and had to borrow money from his neighbour.

"Even today there is no respite. I went to the bank and stood in the queue for sometime but then my legs began to hurt and came back. Arrangements should be put in place for the elderly and disabled people," he said.

why do we see only the negative side of an action that is expected to get favorable to the common man?
Someone who says 'why we have to go on a Sunday to collect our money' - please take time to think for the bank staff who have to tackle so many on a Sunday...also think of the decision to keep banks working on a Sunday so as to get over the temporary setback due to the situation.
Has Kasab and his ilk have gone out of our memory - who are alleged to have counterfeit currency?
Is it not better for us to accept little inconvenience at this point?

Whatever, every one comments with regard to places like Delhi or Mumbai or B’lore. But I disagree all with my personal experience in Mangalore City today.
But in another prominent city of India here in M’lore City as per most of the locals where there is lot of Money, even though its a small city of India, I found there were no queue in the Private Sector new generation Banks nor in the different branches of most of the Nationalized Bank branches. What I found was queue of maximum of about 20- 25 people mainly students in few of the ATM Counters of Banks in heart of M’lore City today 13.11.2016 around 1pm.
There were no big Queue in any Bank Branches in this city, which is also very much part of India and consists of very descent and knowledgeable visionary common public here. Only the students from outstation places staying in M’lore City were seen in front of the ATM Counters opened here from this morning. Had they possess even cheque books with them, they could have easily withdrawn Cash upto Rs 10,000/= from their respective Bank branches. I am sure by Sunday evening on 13.11.2016, almost in all the Cities of India, there would have been peaceful scenario everywhere.
We postpone all work for 3 months when Our Govt announces General or state assembly elections as all the Govt staff avoid entertain the common public, stating they are busy with election duty& postpone serving common public needs to a comfortable 3 month. At that point of time, we all adjust then.
However if all the youth ( even upto 60 yrs of age) in every family have internet banking which was started 15 years back in India &now they keep using their Debit card to make pymts whenever they purchase any items, we need not panic from tomorrow at least, that too only after 5days of Demonetization move by our Central Govt for the benefit of all common people. Trust majority will agree this if they had visited Banks in M'lore City this afternoon.

I can compare today's suffering in India to what we suffered during 1990 Iraq invasion of Kuwait. Only different is, that was Brutal foreign force and this is our own 31% Merciless Phycopaths. But the suffering is same.

With no achievements to his credit, govt is using diversionary tactics. People are made to struggle even on holidays to collect their own money. With no return of black money from abroad, no employment generation to youths, this govt deserves to go sooner. Unfortunately people have to wait till 2019 to boot them out.
