Mumbai Ashamed, Two Girls Molested

NDTV News

The shocking pictures of two young women being molested by a mob of 70 to 80 men at Mumbai's Juhu area in the early hours of New Year's Day, has ashamed the city.

Mumbai, Jan 2: The women, one in a black dress and the other in a jeans and top emerged from the JW Marriott with two male friends around 1:45 am, and began walking towards Juhu beach close by.

A mob of about 40 got after them and began teasing the women when one of the women swore loudly at the hooligans. But the mob, now 70-80 strong, wouldn't let go.

They trapped the women near a vehicle and a tree, and pounced on them. A man in a white shirt tore off the black dress. Another, in a blue shirt, led the assault.

As the women fell on the ground, dozens of men jumped on them.

These pictures were taken by two Hindustan Times lensmen, who alerted the police.

Archana Tyagi, Additional Commissioner of Police, Mumbai said, ''I have seen reports today in Hindustan Times. We will certainly take action. HT didn't show me the pictures yesterday. It happened on 31st night. I got in touch with the girls, they are not from Mumbai and not in Mumbai. We will take action as soon as possible.''

The police said that they will register a suo moto complaint on the case.

Meanwhile, Mumbai's top cop, Commissioner D N Jadhav feels that the incident is being blown out of proportion and that the police did whatever they could to rescue the girls. The commissioner also said that molestation can happen anywhere.

The state's Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil made a statement saying, that the police chief's reaction was inappropriate and that the government was taking the matter seriously.

There is strong reaction from the people on the incident. ''Mumbai is heading towards being the Delhi jungle, where women are attacked every hour. Even if there is no complaint from the girls, police should take action immediately. I am ashamed to live in a city, where there is disrespect all around,'' said adman Alyque Padamse.

''Women in Mumbai are not safe. We have always been asking for an increase in women police force because Mumbai is so crowded and so many people are coming from various places, I think security should be beefed up,'' said Dr Shubha Raul, Mumbai Mayor.

Exactly a year ago in the otherwise known to be safe city, a girl was molested by New Year Eve revellers at the Gateway of India.

Marriott distances itself

The hotel J W Marriott, which the two women had reportedly just left before being attacked by the mob, has distanced itself from the incident.

In a statement the hotel strongly objected to being dragged into the controversy and asserted that the incident did not take place outside the hotel, but closer to a school further down the road.

In fact the hotel added that an assistant commissioner of police was at the hotel along with the staff supervising.

The statement said, ''Whilst we understand that Mariott Mumbai is one of the most important landmarks in the vicinity we strongly disapprove the loose mention of our hotel in this very unfortunate incident.''

Defending its own arrangements the hotel said it had tripled its security for New Years Eve and advised its guests to stay off the streets.

Yes, today’s world and today’s children’s behavior is totally different than ours. We studied the college and left our place then reached different places in the world. Today our children go to different places in the world to acquire higher education with specialized subjects and then follow the customs they meet with.

Many go and never return. Its time for everyone to see today’s world and compare it to the olden days. Parents should always find a way what to teach their children and how to behave with them. Today’s public shows, films, literature, and our day to day’s talk with our children should be reviewed. Most people have studied how to make quick money by sexual contents with books, media, videos, telephones, and computers.

Where does the present generation heading towards? Children are going to other countries and learn many new things and then deliver them to their native places including their own parents. Boy and girl. This is the Human variety throughout world. The behavior may be different at different places around the world.

Now the caste and politics will definitely come to the fore. If the culprits have legal protection based on their religion/caste I wonder cases may be booked against the victims and their relatives who accompanied them for committing 'atrocity' on the psychology of the culprits by being present in front of them at the odd hour at night. Both our laws and Police are capable of doing that!

Traditionally known as a safe city, Mumbai has in recent times is on the path of a dangerous city increasingly for women. Why such a trend.I have no easy answer. But I do have an opinion. Culturally rich, our Indian values are slowly deteriorating for many reasons. Increasingly our children and adults watch 24 hour TV and advertisements and movies coming from around the world where explicity, violence and immoral behaviour has been displayed in our living rooms. This was never existed before. Some would argue that this is unavoidable.

Just like we are bombarded with cars without proper infrastructure, we are showered with TV programs and advertisements of explicity where majority of our society has yet to gain education, not in terms of academic degrees but of social behaviour.Parental values have been tarnished with modernity and increase in various type of violence, robbery, crime, immorality, drunkenness and obscinity is all around us. Young men and women often looking for fun and frolic have fallen prey to modern day menace of immorality and unruly social behaviour.

Our fundamental family unit is breaking down. There is increase in breakdown of marriages. Our interdependency is fading away either through education or affluency. The less affluent and less educated increasingly aspire to what the other side enjoys. The law and order alone cannot solve this menace. As a society we got to come together, build our bridges and try to restore our values. Then only we will be safe.

Disgusting, perverts,I would call them. The culprits should be severely dealt with. This could happen to any woman.  Is it fun to play with a woman's modesty. Those who indulge in rape, molestation and such crimes should not be given small punishment.the punishment should be so severe that any person even thinking of such things should think ten times before he gets tempted.

So many minors are being raped.  Is there no solution to this. Are we going to keep quiet just because it has happened to someone else and not us.It happened last year too.there should have been heavy security in Mumbai so that such things do not repeat.

I sympathise with those girls and those families. Those evil men will get their due if not in this world definitely in the next.It was heartless for a senior police official to comment sayiny the incident was blown out of proportion.God forbid but if it had to happen to one from his family,he would have known what it is.

I have been working in Saudi Arabia for the last 28 Years and never heard an incident like this.I think Govt of india should impose strict punishment or flog the culprits in public to avoid this kind of crime. My sympathy to the women who are molested.

This is not surprisingly and is another incident which goes to show how low our Indians can stoop. All the patriotic, women respectful talk is for the movies only! There should be more security for women in India.

This Act can be Described as Nasty as ever...I am Shocked that people are behaving worse than Animals. Its High Time That the Goverment along with the law and order Department take strignent action against the culprits and also ensure safety of every individual by introducing New laws and forcing the people to follow them.

This is pathetic. I guess with the state of society in our country, this comes as no surprise. If you look around, there are no dearth of people nowadays who talk of such crimes in a casual tone. When society sanctions mob violence on a larger scale (we have seen numerous examples), all of us need to realise that it will ultimately come to our doorstep one day.

The clean up act has to come from society within - and looking at the acceptability that proponents of mob violence have gained, I don't see it happening anytime soon.
