First batch of women fighter pilots inducted into IAF

Hyderabad, Jun 18 (Agencies): The Indian Air Force on Saturday inducted its first batch of women pilots, comprising three cadets into its fighter squadron.

Bhawna Kanth, Avani Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh, will undergo another six months of training in the Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer before they start flying the fighter jets in regular missions like their male counterparts.

They graduated from the IAF academy in Dundigal in December and proceeded to specialised fighter training in the IAF establishment in Hakimpet in Andhra Pradesh.

Six female cadets were competing to become fighter pilots after the government, in a landmark move, approved an IAF plan in October to induct them as fighter pilots. However, only three female trainees were selected for the fighter stream.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar was present to witness the passing-out parade at the Indian Air Force Academy in Hakimpet, Hyderabad.

My hats off and a big salute to the first batch of women fighter pilots who will be joining IAF. Good luck to them. We already have many women commercial pilots working for international and domestic airlines.

@ Zeitgeist, what kind of thinking is this?? Are male fighter pilots deployed at the time of war?? if yes then why you have that big confusion in your mind that female fighter pilots are going sit at home and enjoy the war?? As a normal person like me knows that both(male-Female) are going to fight for their country when it is expected from them to do their work,Jai Ho to this team of Fighters and their families, knowing fully well that, what will be the repercussion of this fight, even though they send their brave sons/daughters to Indian Air Force. These fighters are the role models for youngsters and for all common people. Hats off to them and their families. Jai Hind.

    Devi,

Do you know that women are not usually sent to battle. Thats because if they are ever caught by the enemy then they are likely to suffer abuse in their hands.

So what i was merely saying is that what is the point to training them if they will never be allowed to be deployed in battle.

We have history of brave women like Rani Chennamma , Onake Obavva , Abbakka. Do not under estimate women. They are equally capable of men.

First of all, will these women be deployed during actual war? If not what is the purpose of spending on the training just to satisfy some feminists.

I agree.. they will never be deployed on duty during war.. there are lot of examples in army navy as well as airforce.. Need of the hour is to strengthen our air fleet not include women as pilots..
