Muslims help Christians in Pakistan to build church

Islamabad, Jun 18 (IANS): In a significant display of communal harmony, Muslims in Pakistan's Punjab province are helping their fellow Christian in raising funds to build a church that was allegedly damaged by a mob.

In 2009, Gojra city in near Faisalabad became a fiery furnace after nine people including a bridegroom and bride were shot dead during a wedding ceremony. Some 200 homes and three churches were razed to the ground by a mob that attacked the minority community after local mosques called for retaliation to an alleged blasphemy.

The local police, however, had discredited the allegation that torn shreds of the Quran had been used as confetti at a wedding.

"I pray that we complete this church. We have had to use different homes for services but our congregation has grown beyond the capacity of such places," a release from British Pakistani Christian Association quoted a resident, Khalid Aftab, as saying.

Pakistan is the worst country for non-Muslims. Although their constitution guarantees freedom of religion, in reality, both the govt and people harass and victimize people based on their religion. Draconian Blasphemy law is hanging like a sword over their heads. Human rights activists who support these victimized non-Muslims are themselves branded as Kafirs and fatwas to kill them are passed by the militant mullahs who consider themselves to be the custodians of Islam. Pakistan is, therefore, a failed state, engulfed in the whirlpool of contradictions. They nurtured terrorists like snakes in their neighborhood, thinking that they would bite their neighbors, but these snakes have started biting them now. Hence, Pakistan is exporting terrorists to India and other parts of the world as they have no other commodity to export.

Indeed the constitution of Pakistan guarantees equality and freedom of worship to all citizens. The founder of the country, Mohammed Ali Jinnah also d that Pakistan will remain a secular state although it will be ruled by Muslims. Jinnah feared that the country will go into the hands of the Sunnis if it is made a theocratic state because he belonged to the Shia community which is a minority in Pakistan. This is exactly what happened years later. The country turned from bad to worse when the military dictator Zia-ul-Haq strictly enforced the dreaded blasphemy law, mainly to appease and win the support of the mullahs. Exodus of minorities is still continuing. There cannot be peace and security for minorities until and unless this draconian law is repealed.

Yet it’s pleasing to note at least in one place Muslims help build a church that was once destroyed.
