1000-year-old mosque allows women to enter its portals

Kottayam, Apr 25 (PTI) : For the first time in its history, the 1000-year-old mosque at Thazhathangady here, famous for its rich architecture and wood carvings, has thrown open its doors for Muslim women in Kerala.

Women were allowed to enter the mosque yesterday to take a look at its famed architecture.

Thousands of Muslim women, including tourists, flocked to the mosque from various parts of Kerala and abroad. The move comes at a time when the demand for permitting women at places of worship is gaining ground.

"This is a 1000-year-old mosque. Our women had not seen it so far and had a great desire to visit the holy place. So the mosque committee decided to allow women to visit it on April 24 and May 8", Advocate Nawab Mulladom, President of the mosque committee, told PTI.

The mosque was not opened for "any celebrations or for offering prayers. It was only to allow women to see the place", he said, adding the men were asked to leave the mosque before the women were allowed in.

Muslim women wore their traditional attire during the visit.

Fathima, one of the lucky ones to enter the holy place, said, "Standing before many historical mosques, I had always wanted to enter and offer worship. But I was afraid of even expressing that desire. I am happy that such an opportunity has come now".

The Juma Masjid is a mosque situated at Thazhathangady, one of the Heritage Zones of Kerala, in Kottayam town.

Situated on the banks of the Meenachil river, the mosque is famous for its rich architecture, wood carvings and beauty.

The mosque, considered the oldest in India, is also known as the 'Taj Juma Masjid'.

It has a square inner courtyard, an exquisitely carved wooden gabled roof, a traditional bathing area and lovely latticed windows, making it resemble a king's palace.

Then why this indifference! ?. Can anyone tell whether God Differentiates before and after death based on sex of individual! ?.

The article says "The mosque, considered the oldest in India, is also known as the 'Taj Juma Masjid'".

According to various historical records, the mosques built by Malik Dinar are considered to be the oldest in South India.

Malik Dinar (who some believe is not the same as Malik Ibn/Bin Dinar) arrived in India with a group of people in the Hijri year 22 (642 AD).

The group built a mosque in Kasarkod. If the information is correct, this mosque would have to be the earliest mosque in South India (1370 years old).

Malik Dinar, who visited Mangalore and Barkur as well, then built the Zeenath Baksh Mosque (Juma Masjid) at Bunder in Mangalore just two years later in 644 AD (permitted to do so by Raja Cheruman Perumal of Malabar who converted to Islam).

Instead of making restrictions to enter the mosque by women only on a specific day, would it not be wise enough to allow them for all prayer services since the holiest places are not restricted for worshipping one God the Almighty by the community. Most of the ladies in the community are qualified and can do well in functioning

Islam does not state that women are not allowed to enter the masjid. It only restricts mingling of women and men. There are places for women to worship in masjid but our prophet peace be upon him stated that we should not make our home graveyard. Hence, women are preferred to pray at home. Even men are asked to pray non obligatory prayers at home.

This masjid has beautiful south Indian architecture ...Even one of the oldest masjid in mangalore which is believed to be 1000 years old preserves local flavour..I wish Masjid around coastal Karnataka and Kerala go for the old south Indian wooden carved masjids rather than imitating perso-Indo model (Indo sarcenic) of North India which is fashion in these parts now ...
