Noida, Apr 25 (HT): A sub-inspector was allegedly shot dead as police attempted to nab criminals on the run early on Monday. Police said 40-year-old Akhtar Khan was leading a team, which raided a hideout of Fukran and Javed at Nai Abadi area of Dadri, 30 km from Delhi.

Khan was the first to enter the hideout of the criminals who are wanted in cases of armed robberies.

“As soon as he stepped in to the suspects’ house, some of them started firing. Khan was shot in the neck and collapsed at the spot. The raiding party took cover and fired retaliatory shots but the suspects managed to flee. Khan was rushed to the Dadri government hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” said Anurag Singh, deputy superintendent of police, Dadri.

Khan, who joined the force in 1998 as a constable, was posted as in-charge of Kot police post of Dadri area. Hailing from Aligarh, he had cleared the internal exams to become a sub inspector.

“His family was informed about the incident. Deputy Inspector General Meerut Range Laxmi Singh arrived the city following the incident. We have registered a case against unidentified persons and multiple teams have been formed to arrest the suspects,” said Singh.
Khan’s body was sent for postmortem and will be handed over to his family soon. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Director general of police Javeed Ahmad paid his respects on Twitter. “A brave police officer laid down his life in the line of duty. SALUTE SI AKHTAR KHAN (sic),” he posted.
