Rohith Vemula suicide case not a dalit versus non-dalit issue: Smriti Irani

New Delhi, Jan 20 (Zee News): As politicians cutting across party lines are making a beeline for the campus visit to express solidarity with the agitating students of Hyderabad University, who are protesting over the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula, HRD Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday said that the issue is not a Dalit versus non-Dalit issue.

"This is not a Dalit versus non-Dalit issue as being projected by some to ignite passion," the Union Minister said.

Various political parties and leaders have blamed Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya's letter of August 17 last year to Smriti Irani seeking action against the "anti-national activities" of a students union and the alleged assault of an ABVP leader and a series of five communications from the HRD Ministry between Sept 3 and Nov 19 demanding follow up action for the suicide.

Rejecting the allegations of various political parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said Dattareya's is not the only one, even Congress MP Hanumantha Rao wrote letter raising issues pertaining to Hyderabad University.

Rohith Vemula was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in the New Research Scholars' Hostel late on Sunday. He was one of the five Dalit students suspended from the university and expelled from the hostel and was staging a protest on the campus for the past 15 days.

"The fact-finding team, which was sent by HRD ministry, is expected to return this evening and will file a report," she further said.

Though i may not necessarily agree with your views in toto .., i support any movement that support the cause of fighting atrocities against Dalit's.

Though i may be wrong, in my view, few strata of society may not like to see the empowerment/upliftment of dalit's both intellectually & monitorily.

However, I wish to recall recently assumed Paryaya peetha swamiji Pejavara shri’s divine statement that - He want to bring Dalit's in to the mainstream in all sphere of society.

At the same time, recently I also read somewhere that even the present RSS chief talking about Dalit's in his new found wisdom (if I may say so). In my opinion, one must be aware & beware of RSS's strong political lust which may not necessarily serve the best interest of Dalits of Hindustan.

If we look at the history, on similar lines I would like to recall how Martin Luther King Jr fought a silent but successful movement to bring justice/equality among black people & white people ( worth listening to the all time best “I Have A Dream Speech” - August 28, 1963). As a result of this we could see Barack Hussein Obama as President of US for 2 terms.

On similar line, I wish one day by sheer intellectual/knowledge ability/power we could see a Dalit's conquering everywhere in Hindustan.

It made perfect sense in 1947 to have reservations. Thereafter, land reforms came, most of the education and employment positions were reserved and now we are in the second or third generations. If someone still maintains that Dalits are being side lined, there must be something wrong. May be it is true in states like Bihar, but definitely not in south India.

    @ Mallar,

Let me reflect & take back Hindustan's history for couple of centuries back to say the least that Varna Bheda Neeti was prevalent & in practice since age old days of Hindustan’s History.

As you rightly noted, at least since Independence there is a marked up liftment (monetarily & educationally) of Oppressed communities (AKA dalit's) which you conveniently ignoring (correct me if I am wrong). To say the least that at least in 2nd or 3rd generation Dalit's are fighting for their rightful cause to seek justice which is constitutionally due to them, to the displeasure of elites who try to control & govern affairs of Hindustan, through their direct or indirect political proxies.

    The two suicides:
One week ago a social worker in a village in Muzaffarnagar district of UP, 150 km from Delhi, committed suicide after a video clip of her being raped was made public. It was not a news. No TV cameras reached her village, Rahul Gandhi did not visit her family, Kejriwal did not demand resignation of any ministers.
A student in Hyderabad university, who was suspended for beating a fellow student in his hostel room, committed suicide yesterday, and all the political vultures are flying to Hyderabad to milk the tragedy for all its worth.
All suicides are equal, but some suicides are more equal than others.

The Dalit mistreatment in India and the discrimination of the Afro-Americans in the U.S. are not exactly identical. Though not yet fully solved, the black people discrimination when compared to four decades back has been greatly reduced. Four decades back, when I visited many Christian Churches, the separation of white and black color was very evident, now that has been greatly reduced. Any reduction in the Dalit mistreatment in India during last fifty years? Not at all, but getting worse since the BJP came into power.

When a prominent Afro-American Pastor I met in 1971, he told me that he came from the Korean war, and had to wait through a different door to get his food at a restaurant. Once there was separate rest rooms for the black and white, those things are bygone days.

What about the Dalit discrimination in India now? When I visited one of the poorest village in West Bengal close to the Bhutan border, the Church members were waiting in line to shake hand with me very surprisingly the women were shaking hands with me. The believers who were working in the tea farms-bone and skin-not educated, and most of them died in between 40 and 50. When complimented the Pastor about their advanced social interaction like the westerners, he laughed and replied like this. If these poor people are visiting the local hospital, the doctors won't touch their body, and even the nurses give them shots without touching them. These poor believers are feeling greater satisfaction to shake hand with you.

The 300 million Dalits in India, especially in the northern part of India must be liberated from the age old religion attacked inhuman slavery.

In this country nobody has the right to call other citizen anti-national or traitor etc. Political parties are just elected to rule the country and not to indulge or interfere in anyone's rights which is given by the constitution and if they do so they should be dragged to the court of law. They are freely using this term just to intimidate their opponents and gather support by raising emotions among public. A case has to be registered everytime BJP calls others with this term for intimidation, mental torture, raising tensions in the society and obstructing freedom of speech. If BJP can't handle such situations and gets frustrated and runs out of ideas and just calls the opponents with these names to justify thier stand, should step down because they are incapable of ruling and controlling the situation as per the rules and regulations stipulated in the constitution of India.

Chronology of publicly known events in the tragic suicide of Hyderabad student Rohith Vemula

-The Left wing student organization ASA (Ambedkar Student Association), which Rohith was a member of, protested in the University campus on the hanging of Yakub Memon with some very provocative posters.

-ABVP students take offense of this, one student posts on facebook calling these students ‘goons’ and ‘anti-national’.

-Member of ASA assault that ABVP student, ABVP complains to the University authorities which constitutes an enquiry.

-A second enquiry holds 5 students guilty (previous enquiry absolved them for lack of medical evidence which was provided to the second enquiry)

-ABVP students approach local MP who writes to HRD Ministry for action.

-University, based on the second enquiry report suspends 5 students (including Rohith Vemula). Please note that enquiry reoprt was submitted before BJP MP wrote to HRD ministry for action.

-The suspension was revoked after a month.

-Much later, Rohith commits suicide, blames no one in the suicide letter. Indicates he was academically ambitious and was disillusioned over being used for politics.

Dear friend, she was appointed as a Cabinet Minister by the special interest of Mr. Modi her academic qualifications are too long to read. She will be acting like a serial actress inside the BJP Government.

She is sowing the seeds of troubles one after another targeting the minorities and Dalits without realizing the repercussions and divine hand upon the actions. Simply wait and watch.

Without politics, nobody bothers to causes of poor and oppressed. Issues are raised by sufferers but political parties hijacks them to advance their political chances.

Illogical and illiterate justification from Smriti Irani, to save her chair. Rohith's suicide note clearly indicates he is persecuted for being Dalit, holding the administration responsible. BJP and Smriti as usual have two definitions when they are in opposition and one when they are in power. People is just getting to know tricks of BJP, but too late for them to make any amends.
