Mangalore, Sep 6: "The education till S S LC may be compulsory and uniform, but after SSLC the education should be designed according to one's needs and desire”, said renowned writer, Kannada activist, educationist and critic Kayyara Kinhanna Rai.

He was delivering the inaugural address at Karavali Group of Colleges, on the occasion of Teachers Day.

The current syllabus is not up to the mark and therefore requires careful assessment.  The students are expected to take the initiatives in bringing about changes. Moreover, they ought to take part in the activities that are healthy and help to develop their inner personality. On the whole the education given should help the students to stand on their own feet, he added.

Every teacher was a student once in his life and the ideal teacher is the one who was an ideal student. In the olden days, there was a huge difference between the education given to the untouchables and that of ruling and business classes, Prof Abay Kumar, chairman of the department of Kannada of Mangalore University, who was the chief guest at the programme opined.

The classification of education is not fair and against the concept of education, inter-disciplinary study is what defines ideals and objectives of education, the chief guest said.

The better maintenance of educational institutions is at the hands of teachers while the role played by teachers is more decisive than infrastructure provided. Although education has been commercialized, it is teachers who should not commercialize their services, Ganesh Rao, chairman of Karavali Group of Colleges said.

Latha G Rao, director, Akshaya Kumar, principal of Karavali Group of Colleges, Balakrishna Gatti, C E O of Karavali Group of Colleges and others were present.

Priya D'Sa compered and Sujaya proposed a vote of thanks.
