Udupi, August 27: Choose good things by analyzing carefully and always “Think global and act local”, was the priceless gem of an advise given by Dr Charles Trit, the assistant lecturer of American Milveki School of Engineering, after the inauguration ceremony of the 14th Twinning programme of International Centre for Applied Science (AIKAS), of Manipal.

Dr Trit further informed that reforms carried out in the field of communication, transportation and health has brought about global outlook among engineers, architects and other professionals. He opined that issues such as population explosion has given rise to problems such as climate changes, limited supply of fuel and many other related matters.

Dr Trit touching on the topic of modern transport and communication technology informed that while it does build relations, at the same time creates responsibilities too. Giving an instance he stated that environmental pollution is caused in China by fumes and pollutants let off by the textile factories, and the commercial market for such Chinese textiles is in the US. And hence, he concluded that America too is partially responsible for such a cause. From this example he inferred that, facing such type of challenges is our responsibility. Engineers should think about all kinds of possibilities, Dr Trit averred.

Rajan Padukone, president of the Manipal Universal Learning (MUL) University programmes, presided over the function. Vasanthi Ramdas Pai was present on the occasion. Director of AIKAS prof Raghuveer Pai welcomed the gathering and deputy director Dr G M J Bhat proposed the vote of thanks. President of Stempetics Research Pvt Ltd, B N Manohar introduced the guests. "Think globally and act locally" is a wonderful concept if put in place. It has remained just lecture material for audiences. Dr, Charles, an American, perhaps should have more forthcoming on American attitude on this thinking.

America, the largest polluter of greenhouse emmissions and carbon dioxide must accept the blame before pointing fingers to China or for that matter to India in terms of pollutuion. All former indistrialised nations have polluted our planet and have shown no interest in controlling these emmisions.

US has refused and still refusing to sign the Kyoto treaty to limit greenhouse emmissions. Even today, their hunger for oil, they go global, even with wars, to make sure they have the supplies. American apetite for gas guzzling vehicles have made them addicted for oil. The world, particularly the Eurpoean Union are taking immense measures to control pollution.

While India and China in terms of their current industrialisation and consumerism would perhaps emmit more greenhouse gases if they are not controlled before they get out of hand. India is also towing the line with America by not signing the Kyoto treaty.

India must think local environment before exploding into the path of Industrialsed nations. Of course, this is going to be a challenge for both China and India.
