Mangalore, Aug 13: Nearly 311 students who hailed from poor families and very low income families were given scholarships worth Rs 6, 18,300 at a function at Infosys office here on Sunday August 12. 

The scholarship for this academic year 2007- 08 was sponsored by different organizations like by Prerana, social service trust of Infosys employees of Mangalore centre; Vidya Poshak, Dharwad; Dhrithi Foundation, Mangalore; Yakshagana Kalaranga, Udupi; and Bevinje Sridhar Kakkilaya Prathisthana, Kasargod. 

The employees of Infosys were meeting the expenses of 253 students on their education. The expenses of other students were bored by other organizations, said Naren Koduvattat, managing trustee of Prerana. 

Only if the students score the stipulated marks in all the examinations of this academic year, this sponsorship will be continued for the next academic year, he informed and urged the students to word hard.

Koduvattat further said that before selecting the students for sponsorship, the members of Vidya Poshak had systematically checked background of theirs.

More importance was given to education by the people in the district, said M Maheshwar Rao, deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district.

Prerana and Vidya Poshak provide guidance to students on choice of courses and their career with the help of other organizations, he concluded.
