Justice B N Srikrishna

Mumbai, Aug 9: Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has directed the law and judiciary department and police in the state to probe lapses in implementation of Srikrishna Commission report on the 1992-93 Mumbai riots that claimed over 900 lives.

Deshmukh has also submitted a status report to the Congress party high command on progress in implementation of the Commission report, which had indicted several politicians, including Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and some police officials, for their alleged role in the riots.

The chief minister submitted the status report to AICC General Secretary Margaret Alva during her visit to city on August seven.

"I apprised her over the action taken report and the total cases registered against those indicted by the Commission," he said.

A delegation led by noted film maker Mahesh Bhatt and Congress MLA and former minister Naseem Khan met Deshmukh recently, seeking `fast-track' process to implement the report and probe lapses.

The Chief Minister has assured us that he will set up a team of capable officers having integrity to ensure that action was taken in a time-bound manner as per the Supreme Court guidelines, Bhatt told PTI.

Several Muslim organizations and NGOs have organised a rally here on August 20 to demand immediate implementation of the Justice Srikrishna report and initiation of action against Sena leaders and policemen indicted by the Commission.
