Itanagar, Oct 28 (IANS): In a development holding serious political ramifications in Congress-ruled Arunachal Pradesh, state tourism minister Prema Khandu on Tuesday resigned from the cabinet, accusing the chief minister of "failing to live up to the expectations of the people".

In a letter sent to Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, Khandu said he did not consider it appropriate to continue as the government led by Tuki had lost the support of the Congress legislature party and the state's people at large.

"...the government under your leadership has miserably failed to live up to the expectations of the general public of Arunachal Pradesh. There is no democracy within the party nor political stability due to which governance is at its lowest in the state," he said.

The state, for the past few years, had been going through an unprecedented financial crisis and yet the chief minister had not taken any significant steps towards improving the state of affairs, Khandu said.

Khandu, a son of former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister late Dorjee Khandu, held the portfolios of art and culture, urban development, town planning, housing and municipal affairs.

Khandu entered state politics after his father's death in a chopper crash in 2011. Prema Khandu was subsequently given a cabinet berth.

Several members of the Nabam Tuki cabinet have in the past accused the chief minister of running a dictatorial government and lamented the alleged lack of internal democracy in the party and the government.

Earlier this month, two legislators said they were made to sign an undated resignation letter by Tuki at a dinner party, which was later submitted to the assembly speaker without their knowledge.
