Mangalore, Jul 24: The unit system set up by the State Government is infringement of Supreme Court order on food security, said Praveen, convener of Aahara Hakkigagi Aandolana – Karnataka (Campaign for Food Rights – Karnataka).

He was speaking at an interactive meeting on food security organized by the NGO Okkuta and Aahara Hakkigagi Aandolana–Karnataka held at Prajna Counselling Centre here on Monday July 23.

He said government has breached the order of Supreme Court. According to the unit system each member of a family will get five kilograms of rice.

He further said that a family who has above four members will get 25 kilograms of rice. The family that has two members will get 10 kilograms of rice. But the system did not include children as family members, he added.

He said that ration shops should function for eight hours in a day and should be kept open for six days in a week (except on Tuesday and public holidays).

A committee comprising DC, ZP CEO and district–in–charge secretary should organize a grievance meeting related to food security every month either on the first Saturday or third Saturday and redress the grievances of the public. But, regrettably the committee is not functioning acceptably in the State, he lamented.

NGO Federatio president Renny of Valored, campaign representative Shivprasad were present on the occasion.
