Udupi, Jul 23: A large section of today’s youth think that solid waste management, cleanliness, sanitation, road safety, etc, are not their piece of work. But here is a ray of hope.

To prepare the urban youth towards making the city neat and tidy, district unit of the Red Cross Society has chalked out a project and is ready to launch the same in colleges. The programme is being sponsored by the City Municipal Council.

As part of the programme, Red Cross is taking up a cleanliness awareness campaign to inform the students of the importance of waste separation and the modus operendi of its management, cautions to be taken against breaking out of maleria and other vector-born diseases, etc, Secreatry of Red Cross Society, Dr Sharath Kumar said.

‘‘If the people take initiative in these programmes, we need not wait for the government for community health,’’ he added. The Red Cross has also planned to hold workshops on road safety measures including holding live demonstrations in the schools of the district with the participation from the Youth Red Cross and the Junior Red Cross.

‘‘A training of trainees (ToT) for the school teachers on road safety subject has also been planned and the assistance from Deputy Director of public Instructions will be sought‘‘, he added. Vice Chairman of the Red Cross, Basrur Rajeev Shetty said that the Society had already distributed as many as 100 certified first aid kits to government schools and colleges and had held hundreds of demonstrations of first aid treatment.
