Decided to separate in ten days of marriage: VJ Ramya

Chennai, Sep 20 (TOI) :  When actor and VJ Ramya, a popular face on television, recently announced on Twitter that she is getting a divorce from her husband, Aparajith Jayaraman, speculation as to the reason behind the separation began to do the rounds. Ramya clears the air, and tells more.

"I was shooting in Malaysia for Jodi finale after I tweeted about my divorce. I am still not going to give the exact reason as to why we got separated, but there has been a lot of speculation and I wanted to put an end to it. Though my followers on Twitter never put up anything negative, a few websites and newspapers have written about how my husband and his family were not very happy about my decision to act in O Kadhal Kanmani, and have cited that as a reason for my divorce. I want to clarify that this is absolutely false. I got married on February 21, 2014, and a mere ten days after the marriage, due to issues I don't want to talk about, I decided to separate. I realised that the marriage is not going the right way and I moved back to my mother's place. Mani Ratnam sir's offer came in the first week of September and shooting started in the fourth week of the same month — which is seven months after my marital situation arose. Within those first ten days, we realised that our marriage was not going in the right direction; we tried to patch up, but it never worked. If you think logically, I really didn't have to wait till I got married to act in a movie. I have been in the industry for the past so many years.

I came into showbiz when I was 19, and I am 28 now. And all these years I could have easily acted in films had I wanted to, and I must say, I also received many offers. But I declined them all because I was not comfortable acting and my family was also not quite fine with me doing films. I respected their decision. I had no reason to get married to act in a movie. Even if people think acting is the reason for the divorce, I got so many offers after O Kadhal Kanmani, but I didn't take up anything. So, to reiterate, those speculations that the separation is because of my decision to do films, are totally false. I just don't want to disclose the reason why we took this decision to separate because it will hurt a lot of people, including my parents and his. And I still respect them a lot. I don't want to publicise something that is very personal. I felt that just like how I announced my wedding, I should inform all that my marriage has been dissolved as well, and that the legal work regarding it is also over. It is not like we fought and decided to separate or anything, I haven't asked for alimony. It was done with mutual consent, and has been very dignified," says Ramya, who was introduced to Jayaraman by her parents.

"This was an arranged marriage. Had it been a love marriage, I would've understood him and he would have understood me. But since this was one of those 'perfect' arranged marriages, I met him only a couple of times. Plus, he was in London. So, it was only after we got married and started living together that we realised it is not going to work. In fact, both the families were also involved in the separation, and were part of the decision. They too realised that there is no future to this marriage," she says.

As for her future projects, Ramya says, "After doing Mani sir's film, I thought I should give acting a shot and take up roles that suit me. So now, I am slightly leaning towards acting. I don't mind diversifying into films full time either," she signs off.
