Mysore, Jul 3: Though the rain fury abated a bit across Kodagu district, several areas of Bhagamandala remained submerged under rain water.
 
The flood situation in Kodagu district continued to remain grim on Monday, even as the swollen Krishna river persisted with its depredations across Belgaum district.


Water was released from KRS reservoir near Mysore on Monday as water level reached 93.70 feet. Water inflow is 43409 cusecs and out flow is17883 cusecs.

One person was killed after he was trapped under a wall which crashed near Handli in Kodlipet on Sunday night. M S Bharmappa (58) had gone to his shed to fetch fodder for cattle when the wall came crashing down on him.

Though the rain fury abated a bit across Kodagu district on Monday, several areas of Bhagamandala remained submerged under rain water. There was at least six feet of water on Bhagamandala-Aiyangeri Road and four feet of water on Bhagamandala-Madikeri Road. Bethri bridge was under two feet of water from the swollen Cauvery river. It was for the first time in 14 years that the river has inundated the bridge.

In the last 24 hours, Talacuvery has recorded 193 mm rain and Bhagamandala 156 mm.

Vehicular traffic between Virajpet and Madikeri has been thrown out of gear.In Sakleshpur town of Hassan district, the Hemavathi river waters inundated the Hole Beedi, Ashoka Road, Subhash Maidan and KSRTC depot.

Meanwhile, several parts of Belgaum district faced imminent floods for the third year in succession as Maharashtra continued to release water from its reservoirs in view of the persisting rainfall in that state.The swirling Krishna river waters have already submerged 16 bridges and roads across the district. The river has overflowed its banks on the outskirts of several villages in Chikkodi taluk including Kallol, Manjari and Yedur.

According to the district administration, about 740 houses have been partially damaged and eight totally damaged in the rain. The administration estimated that the total loss of properties in natural calamities since April this year stood at Rs 2,434.44 lakh.

With no let-up in areas vulnerable to floods on Monday too, the local administration is preparing itself for the worse and initiating measures to face the  floods effectively.

 As against the normal 103.7 mm rainfall in June, the district recorded 249.3 mm. According to sources, about 2.15 lakh cusecs of water has been released from Rajapur reservoir. Water released from the Almatti dam stood at 2.12 lakh cusecs as on Monday.

Belgaum district’s submerged bridges and roads are the Bhoj road, Akkol bridge, Borgaon road, Bedkihal road, Kunnur bridge, Bhivshi bridge, Yedur bridge, Saundatti bridge, Rajapur road, Teerth Road, B K Kusnal road, Ugar-KH road, Ainapur road, Kudchi bridge, Halediggewadi-Hosadiggewadi road and Asoga-Khanapur bridge.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Dr Vijaykumar Torgal said in Belgaum that several boats have been rushed from Karwar and kept ready for any contingency in the flood-prone areas of Chikkodi, Athani and Raibag taluks.
