Mangalore, Jun 4: A case has been filed at Ullal police station in the matter of pollution of a prawn culture farm with toxins which took place on Friday night. The farm belongs to Sharath Karkera, a resident of Amblamogaru of Munnur Village.

Inhis complaint, Karkera has one Mohammad Salih of the act. He is said to be a rickshaw driver.  Police have begun an investigation in this regard. Sources say that he has since been absconding.

In the meantime, some samples of dead proawns have been sent to a lab by the police to ascertain the cause of death. Only thereafter, said the police, it could be confirmed if they perished of wanton toxification or of natural causes.

Because of the wholesale destruction of the prawn culture farm, Sharath Karkera has suffered a loss about Rs 9 lac. In normal course after a few months, he was to earn a profit of Rs 12 lac as per sources. The incident came into light on Saturday, June 2.

The incident is also linked to political rivalry in the backdrop of the Ullal by-election. Political colour was attached to it when the BJP candidate Chandrashekhar Uchil visited the spot when the news was reporteda and also spoke to the police from the spot.

The experts of the Fisheries College here would visit the spot on Monday, June 3, sources confirmed.
