I want to be a major player for NE United: Simao

Lisbon, July 23 (IANS): Former Portuguese international footballer Simao Sabrosa, who has been roped in by NorthEast United FC as their marquee player for the 2015 Indian Super League (ISL), says he wants to be a major contributor for the franchise and help them lift the trophy this time around.

"Everyone I have spoken to has good things to say about the ISL -- from players who were there to the press worldwide. They all say it is very well organised and will get better with each year. I want to be a major player at the club and help the team win the championship," Simao, who played in 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups, was quoted as saying by the ISL website on Wednesday.

The midfielder, who was an integral part of leading Spanish club Atlético Madrid's Europa League-winning team in 2010, said he cannot wait for the pre-season to begin and is really excited about knowing his new team-mates.

"I'm super excited to start pre-season, to get to know my teammates and all the people at the club. Really looking forward to it! I will share all my experience, demonstrate what I have learned, and pass on my knowledge on a professional level,” he said.

The 35-year-old, who has plied his trade for European giants Barcelona, Benfica and Atlético, believes supporters are a necessity for any team and expects them in plenty when the season begins in October.

"Fans are very important; their support gives us a lot of strength and a lot of confidence. I hope I can count on them to support our team," Simao, who scored 22 goals in 85 matches for Portugal, said.

Simao also stated he loves playing a free role even though he has played as a left-winger for much of his career.

"I prefer to play the attacking midfielder, the so-called number 10."

NorthEast United play their first match of the season away from home when they take on Kerala Blasters FC on October 6.
