Manglaore, May 24: Bangladeshi student Shakil Mohd Irfanul Haque at the centre of a visa row in the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) is no gullible sincere student.

In 1996, Haque enrolled for a four-year BE programme in Electronics and Communications at KREC. Described as intelligent and talkative, by his teachers, he soon turned alcoholic and drug addict.

By 2004, even after a period of eight years he had to clear as many as 20 papers.According to norms, Haque had to return to Bangladesh. But he got his visa extended by 14 months.Haque collected his TC on April 17, 2006 but failed to appear for the examinations.

What compelled NITK to help a discredited student, despite stiff opposition from his department?

NITK by stiffling voices that demanded logical end to bonafide certificate issue, has refused to clear the air of all controversies.
