Portuguese Silva is new Olympiacos head coach

Athens, July 8 (IANS): Portugal's Marco Silva, the former coach of Sporting Lisbon, has joined Greek football club Olympiacos as head coach, replacing Vitor Pereira.

Silva declined to make a statement to the media upon his arrival at Athens International Airport on Tuesday where Olympiacos officials were awaiting him, reports Efe.

The arrival of the new coach was expected in mid-June, but he was held up in negotiations to break his contract with Sporting, which was supposed to expire in 2018.

Silva began his career with the Portuguese club Estoril starting in the second division, later earning promotion to the first, and then finished with Sporting last season as champion of Taca de Portugal and in third place of the Primeira Liga.

Pereira signed a two-year contract with Turkish club Fenerbahce.
