Rogerio set to end record-breaking career

Rio De Janeiro, May 15 (IANS): Record-breaking Brazilian goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni admitted on Friday he is likely to end his decorated career in August.

The 42-year-old's hopes of winning a third Copa Libertadores title ended on Wednesday when Sao Paulo were eliminated on penalties in their round of 16 clash against Brazilian rivals Cruzeiro, Xinhua news agency reported.

"I love Sao Paulo, this is my life," Rogerio told reporters. "I have been playing here for 25 years. It's a pity to say goodbye this way.

"It was my last chance to play in a final. My role now is probably going to be to support Sao Paulo."

Rogerio said he would see out his contract, which expires in August -- midway through Brazil's Serie A season.

A free-kick and spot-kick specialist, Rogerio is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the highest-scoring keeper in history. He has netted 114 goals from more than 1,000 first-team appearances for Sao Paulo.

The stopper was a part of Sao Paulo's Copa Libertadores-winning teams in 1993 and 2005, and was Brazil's backup goalkeeper at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
