Liverpool must spend big next season: Gerrard

London, May 11 (IANS): Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has urged the English football club owners to provide funds to manager Brendan Rodgers to replenish the outfit and transform them into serious contenders again for the next season.

The club saw its hopes of qualifying for the Champions League dashed as it played out a 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Sunday.

Manchester United are now six points clear of their rivals in fourth place and boast a far superior goal difference, with Liverpool destined for the Europa League.

"It's important the lads get some rest after these last couple of games and the owners dig deep and help Brendan and the lads out and try and make some additions," Gerrard was quoted as saying by express.co.uk on Monday.

"There is a great core of players here, with terrific potential, and the future is looking alright. But it is important that you try and compete with the giant clubs in the league because they are all going to spend big," he said.

The midfielder maestro, who is set to move to Los Angeles Galaxy in the next summer said, losing big names have hurt the outfit in this year’s campaign.

"We found that out this year. We lost Luis Suarez. We haven't had Daniel Sturridge available and it's been pretty tough," he said.
