Udupi, Mar 18: Two students hailing from Haryana, said to be studying in IIIT Bangalore, drowned near the Kaup light-house near here on Sunday, March 18 afternoon.

The tragedy took place around 1-30 pm. Four students, reportedly all hailing from Haryana, had come on a pleasure trip to Udupi and the surrounding areas. Their names have been mentioned by the police as Shubham, Sumit, Arun and Varun. As they went to swim in the sea, the local Mogaveera leaders are said to have warned them not to venture into the sea, as it was a hazardous spot.

As they were dragged into the sea by massive waves, local swimming experts Dayanand and Raja, swung into action to save them. While Arun and Varun were brought to safety, Shubham (24) and Sumit (23) could not be saved. These brave locals also managed to extricate the two bodies from the sea.

The bodies have been kept in the morgue of the Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, pending arrival of the relatives to claim them.

The locals said it is very common for upcountry visitors who rarely have the privilege of sighting the sea to get excited when they see such a sight. Normally they ignore the warnings and get into a kind of misadventure. Besides, youngsters tend to have overconfidence in themselves, they added.
