Udupi, Mar 7: Abhiman Acharya, a student of II PUC who is also a student of MICE-Udupi has been awarded first rank in the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) held on February 4.

Earlier at the Karnataka state-level a total of 1131 students had participated out of which 31 were selected.  MICE Udupi had the privilege of having 9 of their students in the top bracket with Abhiman Acharya topping the entire list.

National-level Mathematical Olympiad:

At the national-level a total of 300 students appeared for INMO. Abhiman Acharya stands first among these 34 selected at national-level Olympiad. He is the son of U Rajaram Acharya. 

International-level Mathematical Olympiad:

The best six are selected to represent India in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) which will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam in July 2007. 

Some perks enjoyed by the INMO awardees:

  • Students qualifying in INMO will undergo a month-long training camp in the month of May 2007 at the Homi Baba center for Science Education, Mumbai.
  • They are automatically eligible for admission to the B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics course in the Chennai Mathematical Institute.
  • Eligible for an NBHM scholarship that currently stands at about Rs. 2500 per month, if they continue their studies in mathematics.
  • Students who make it to the IMO are eligible for the prestigious KVPY fellowship provided they pursue their studies in the science subjects in India. The fellowship amount stands at Rs. 4000 per month.
  • Students who win medals at the IMO are given cash awards by the NBHM, the prize money depending on the medal won. In recent years, they have also been felicitated by the Infosys foundation.
  • All travel expenses for the IMO Training Camp and all expenses for the IMO are borne by the Government of India.

MICE-Udupi student, Uttam Bhat of IIT-JEE training programme, studying in I PUC, is awarded Rs.28,000/- per annum  under the prestigious KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana) Scholarship.

KVPY is an on-going programme initiated by the department of science and technology, government of India to encourage students of basic sciences, engineering and medicine to take-up research careers in these areas. The aim of the programme is to identify and encourage talented students with aptitude for research.

First Stage:

After an initial short listing of applicants, about 10,000 students from all over India appear for an examination in November.

Second Stage:

From among these students 500 students are selected for interview. Around 90-95 students are selected as Kishore Vaigyans every year and are eligible for a scholarship of Rs.28000/- per year.  Uttam Bhat is one among these 95 selected students.  Uttam is the son of Dr Gopalakrishna Bhat and Vinutha Bhat of Manipal.

Students Selected for National-level in INChO, INAPO Olympiads:

MICE Udupi – IIT-JEE student, Dileep Kini, studying in II PUC is selected in the national-level (2nd stage) of International Chemistry Olympiad.   Uttam Bhat, studying in I PUC is selected in the National Level (2nd stage) of International Astronomy Olympiad.   

First Stage of Chemistry / Astronomy Olympiads (NSEC/ NSEAP):

National standard examination in chemistry/ astronomy was held on November 26, 2006. MICE students Chethan Kumar and Dileep are among the top 200 students selected from the country in Chemistry. Shreyas Shetty and Uttam Kumar are among the top 200 students selected from the country in Astronomy.

Second stage of chemistry/ astronomy Olympiads (INChO/ INAPO):

Indian National Chemistry/ Astronomy Olympiads were held in January 2007. On the basis of performance in this examination about 30-35 students are be short-listed in each field. Dileep in Chemistry and Uttam in Astronomy are among the selected students.

Final stage of Chemistry / Astronomy Olympiads:

The short-listed students in each subject are invited to the Indian Olympiad Training Camps at Mumbai. The best of the students in the camp then represent India at the International Olympiads.
