'Film composers should be analytical about audience'

Chennai, April 12 (IANS): Debutant music composer Varshan says it's easy being an independent music artist but when it comes to composing tunes for films, one has to be wary about the pulse of the audience.

Varshan is making his debut with upcoming Tamil film "Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai".

"It was very exciting for me to work under a director for the first time. It's very easy to be an independent music composer. But when it comes to film music, a music director should be analytical about audiences. 'Purampokku...' transformed me from a composer to an entertainer," Varshan said in a statement.

"The film's title captured the attention of all. It became a challenge for me to run on par with the film's expectation. Yet it is a golden opportunity for a debutant to work in a multi-starrer film," he said.

The film, directed by S.P. Jhananathan, stars Vijay Sethupathi, Shaam, Arya and Karthika Nair in lead roles.

"I am basically a music instrumentation graduate from Trinity College of London. And, later pursued Indian music from Chennai Music College. Jhananathan sir liked my scratch tracks and gave me this opportunity to work.

"I have composed five songs in the film. All the more I was very conscious that my composition should complement Jhananathan sir's script," he said.

The film, produced by UTV Motion Pictures, is slated for release on May 1.
