11 crore accounts opened under Jan Dhan Yojana: Modi

New Delhi, Jan 10 (IANS): The government has exceeded its target of opening bank accounts before time under its flagship scheme 'Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana' and opened around 11 crore accounts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Saturday.

"We had to open seven crore bank accounts by Jan 26, but I feel proud in saying that around 11 crore people have opened bank accounts till Jan 10 under the Jan Dhan Yojana," Modi said at a Bharatiya Janata Party rally in Delhi which is likely to hold assembly elections in February.

Over 19.5 lakh bank accounts have been opened in Delhi since the launch of the government's flagship financial inclusion scheme Aug 28, he said.

True the claim of opening 11 crore accounts may be right. How could the nationalized banks function with all the new 11 crore account holders being illiterate not knowing to write a cheque not knowing where to sign on the check and also the worst scenario is increase in number of bank accounts without corresponding increase in bank employees. The employees are stressed to the maximum all opting for Voluntary Retirement. I am a witness to such stressful scenes in a bank. Popularity based Political games should not result in poor governance. With most of the accounts being "No Frills Accounts" the cost of maintaining the accounts is far greater than having an account. No wonder the bottom line of the banks is depleting and NPA's are on the increase.
