Sydney, Dec 23 (IANS): The leader of the opposition in Australia's New South Wales (NSW) state resigned Tuesday over revelations that he provided electoral help to the Sydney hostage crisis gunman Man Haron Monis, reported media.
Leader of opposition John Robertson resigned after moves began to oust him over the revelations, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
Robertson had been facing growing internal pressure to resign after it was revealed he sent a letter to a government department on behalf of Monis in 2011.
Monis took 17 people hostage at the cafe in Sydney Dec 15, that left three including him dead.
Robertson's decision to quit came after senior colleagues delivered him an ultimatum Tuesday, indicating that if he did not relinquish the leadership voluntarily they would takes steps to remove him.
Australian Labor Party's Robertson has been opposition leader since the change of government in NSW in 2011.
