Mangalore, Oct 19: It is essential to make small and medium enterprises aware of their legal rights in order to help them protect their intellectual property, said S S Dhillon, director, Small Industries Service Institute (SISI), Bangalore.

He was speaking at the inaugural function of the one-day sensitisation programme organised by SISI on Wednesday October 18 here. Dhillon said that SISI has already reserved a sum of Rs 50 crore to create awareness about intellectual property rights (IPR) among small and medium entrepreneurs.

Prof G K Shivakumar, director, National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) opined that duplication of products by those who misuse intellectual property rights has adversely affected small and medium entrepreneurs.

Among those present at the inaugural function were Kumble Narasimha Prabhu, vice president, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, SISI deputy directors P V Velayudhan, S N Rangaprasad and H V Ananda Murthy, assistant director (Bangalore).

The resource persons for the technical session were J Suresh, faculty member, Bangalore National Law School of India, T V Madhusudan, assistant controller, Patents and Design (Chennai), Dr R N Narahari, faculty member, Indian Institute of Science, N G Lakshminarayan, Bangalore National Research Development Centre and others.
