Narendra Modi announces lifelong visas for PIOs

New York, Sept 28 (PTI) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday told a rapturous crowd of NRIs that Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) cardholders will get lifetime Indian visa and that American tourists will be given visa on arrival.

Modi, who arrived at the packed Madison Square Garden to a rousing welcome, announced the merger of PIO and Overseas Citizens of India schemes to facilitate hassle-free travel to the Indian diaspora.

He announced that PIO cardholders staying in India on long-term basis will no longer have to report to the local police station.

At the unique event in the heart of Manhattan attended by some 20,000 cheering NRIs, Modi said that his big win in the Lok Sabha elections had come with a big responsibility for him which he would fulfil. Modi affirmed that India will move ahead at a rapid pace and lead the 21st century world.

Listing out India’s advantages, the prime minister said that its three strengths were democracy, demographic dividend in which 65 per cent of its population was under 35 years, and the demand for India because it was a huge market. “My effort is to make development a mass movement. I am confident that we will succeed. This country is going to make rapid progress.

“There are many expectations from the new government. This government will be 100 per cent successful in fulfilling the aspirations of people,” he said amid loud cheers.

“My dream is to see every Indian family has a home by 2022,” he said.
Clearly with an eye on the younger generation, Modi said, “We will not do anything which will let you down.”

Attired in a saffron Nehru jacket and yellow kurta, the prime minister held the packed indoor stadium spellbound, asserting that “our attempt is to make development a people’s movement.”

In his 75-minute-long speech in Hindi which he began with “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” while extending greetings for Navratri festival, Modi promised good governance, saying that after a gap of 30 years India has got a government at the Centre with a clear majority.

He also had a jibe at poll predictions in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections. “No political pundit or opinion-maker could fathom such a verdict,” he said.

“Winning elections is not about any post or chair. It’s a responsibility. Since taking over (as prime minister), I have not even taken a 15-minute vacation,” he said.
“You may not have voted in 2014 but I am sure that when the results were coming, you didn’t sleep and you all celebrated,” he told the NRIs.

Promising a fast pace of development, Modi said, “There is no reason to be disappointed. India will progress very fast and the skills of our youth will take India ahead.”

    @ John Tauro,Kuwait.
    Quote:
In the interest of national security it is not advisable to issue visas on arrival to Americans. There are thousands of Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Iranians and Arabs who have acquired American citizenship. Even some G.C.C. countries have banned visas to Pakistanis, Afghans and Bangladeshis. Unquote.

I fully agree with you on the above. There is also a concern in the US, that many children of above origins might be trying to enter US thru the Mexican borders for the dubious purpose of terrorism too.

Quote : Secondly what’s the need to grant lifelong visas to PIOs? These PIOs are those who have happily given up Indian citizenship and are no more interested in the welfare of India. I have heard people saying “India mein rehne ka kya faida?” or “Indian bane rehne se kya milega?”Unquote.

Many Indians who fall in the above category, returned to India, during the financial meltdown in the US filling the gap of the technical skills India lacked, and were also instrumental in many start ups in India too.

Having the PIO and OCI doesn't mean all Indians of US origin will rush back to India, but will open the door for more social and economic interaction between both the countries which is beneficial for India too.

We as NRIs in the Gulf etc. left India with the same attitude of "India mein rehne ka kya faidha?" isn't it???

Thanks to NRI remittances to India, which are the largest in the world, and the NRIs who realised the potential of returning/investing in India at the moment in time.

India needs to open the doors to its neighboring countries too, so that we will have free exchange of persons and commerce thereby reducing our reliance on the west to a certain extent.

Opening the doors to the global Indian diaspora will bring in opportunities never seen before.

First time in my life I felt that we should encourage our children pursue higher education in India rather than looking for any foreign country because being NRE we missed many social life of our beloved India but we don’t want our children suffer like this. Though it is late many like me might have realized now that money is not the only motive in our life!!!! There are many things goes beyond money but that is enjoyable only in our home country i.e. Bharat

I do agree with you, With a US passport I can visit a gulf country without any problems I can get a visa on arrival at the airport. Unfortunately being an Indian origin and having a surrendered Indian passport, I can not enter my own country without a visa taken from US Indian embassy/consulate. I was always talking on this with my friends and laughing about Indian govt. rules.

Mr. Modi has done this. “and that American tourists will be given visa on arrival” good news for all those who doesn’t obtained their PIO or OCI. Big headache is gone!

We have to wait and see, as it is too early to ask for results.
Anything he does good to the Indian public will be appreciated whole heartedly.
Now he has openly told the world what he intends to do as PM of India, how he is going to develop India and house every Indian by the year 2022.
I wish our PM well in all the good work he is going to do in the years to come, to develop India further and carry on the good work done by his predecessor Govt.

Very good speech by PM Modi.
If all he professed at the MSG are done with, then he is a real doer. There is no doubt he is a workaholic and if he makes his Ministers etc too fall in line with him to be responsible towards their duties, then he will definitely succeed.
It's not the visas but what he said about using demographic advantage - using youth for development. He has promised not to disappoint them.
I think if all that comes true as time passes, India will see good times with out dated laws abolished and quick service brought in, to speed up work\getting rid of red tape.
I like what he did during his USA trip and wish him success now and in the future. Hope his dream of every Indian having a roof over his head by the year 2022, comes true.

I was a proud Indian watching his speech. When the Indian national anthem was sung at the Madison Square and our proud PM singing along, I was deeply moved. How many of our Indian political leaders have started their speech with 'Bharath Matha ki Jai' in the past at the foreign soil??? It was not an empty political speech, but a true Indian pouring his heart out in the best spirit of the Indians. The speech has been debated in the western media and must have given goose bumps to US and UK political biggies..Today I was very proud to speak about my Indian PM in my office which I was never able to do when MMS led us for past 10 years. This is once a life time leader and hope every Indian supports him in the fulfillment of his vision for the country.. Hope Modi visits UK soon..Soooo disheartening to see the cheap comments in this forum.

I agree to the point that, probably there was no publicity.. But firstly why was there no publicity? Secondly even if someone arranged for the publicity do you think MMS would have been able to live up the publicity created? Probably not because his presence was just NOT felt, not only abroad but within India itself. I greatly admire the integrity and intellectual capacity of MMS and I respect him.. He was one of best finance ministers that India ever had. But he was definitely not doing justice to the throne of PM. For me a leader must not only be an intellectual but also be BOLD, OUTSPOKEN and a VISIONARY..because billions of people look upto them and draw inspiration from them.. And you accept it or not, the fact is Modi has all of it in him.. Long live our PM....

The scheme for PIOs to get life time visa is already there. That is OCI (overseas citizenship card). I asked PIOs, why you can not use OCI ? They said they love India, but, they love their money also. For OCI card, consulates charge $ 278 (Rs 16,680) which they do not want to pay. Now, it seems, Modi is intending to make both PIO and OCI card into one. It is presumed that those who have PIO card, may have to pay less for the new scheme. But, those who do not have PIO card, I do not think, they can get the new card at a lower fee. Some PIOs have never travelled to India in their life time and hence, for this new scheme, how many will apply, cannot not be said.

There is some confusion here. There is no dual citizenship in India, like some other countries. What MMS granted was OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India card). An Indian cannot have both, Indian Passport and at the same time other country's passport. Even if someone is granted naturalization in India, the foreign national has to surrender his passport with his embassy and only then Indian passport is issued to him.

of course we have reached mars by cheapest cost, less than auto fare,
our scientist need appreciations and why Modi is taking credit out of this? who started this mission ? who funded this mission? it is the MANMOHAN SINGH. During his tenure many impotent mile stones were achieved people should not forget about this,
Millions Indians are working in US and other part of the countries , it is the BIG achievement of previous govt and modi is taking credit for this.
Let PM Modi achieves such milestone and start taking credit, then we will appreciate him.

Chadrayana's was Vajapayee's dream and ambitious program. It started in 2003 but completed during UPA's rule.

Modiji gave credit for Indians, not for himself in his speech.

Yesterday most frustrated people are our CONGIS. This program was live telecast in 80 countries. Whatever the channels they switch Kannada, Hindi, English ....etc, only MODI was haunting them :-)

Though it looks very rosy there in U.S, in reality it's nothing but a "Farce" OR one can call it nothing but a "Publicity Stunt".

That's it. At least his supporters there in U.S and back here at India are happy and enthused with the event.

Popat banthe banthe hi aakhir me bach gaya YA Obama ne bachaya bechaara Modi ko!!!

Nothing great is going to happen whether it is in "Madison Square" OR even at "Times Square".

"True Color" of Mr. Modi will not change!!!

Pehele "Soch aur Vichar" badalne padenghe to hi is desh me kuch badlav hoga sab ke saath!!!

America aur India me Raath aur Din ka pharakhh he!!!

America me Hindu ho ,Issahi ho, ya Musalman ya aur koi ho,....partiality naheen jo Mr. Modi ne kar dhikaya he Gujarath me!!!
