Bangalore, Sep 20: Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi are among metropolis where women employees suffer least mental harassment against those employed in Ludhiana, Kolkata and Pune.

These are findings of a survey, ‘‘Night Shift for Women: Growth & Opportunities,’’ conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

It reveals that women employees across the country face the maximum insecurity in sectors such as leather and textiles while hospitals and BPO industry provide them with the maximum security.

Mental harassment for women employees is reported lesser in Bangalore at 6%, followed by 7% in Chennai, 8% Hyderabad and 9% in Mumbai. In the case of Delhi, it is 14%, but the industrial hubs of Ludhiana, Kolkata and Pune have a much higher harassment rate at 27%, 19% and 17%, the findings say.

The survey, sponsored by the National Commission for Women (NCW), carries the responses of 272 women employees in the above cities. It highlights that 85.15% women employees are satisfied with their employers’ attitude towards them.

The respondents from Chennai (98%), Bangalore (97%), Hyderabad (94%) and Mumbai (91%) are satisfied with their employers. As many as 84% respondents from Delhi and 88% from Kolkata are satisfied with their employers.

From Ludhiana and Pune, respondents are least satisfied with their employers. Mental harassment is faced more by small-scale firms employees (21%), it is least in case of large-scale firms (8%) and moderate in medium scale firms (14%).

The report notes: ‘‘Level of satisfaction on the basis of size of the firm indicate that large scale firms are on better grounds from all points of consideration.

Large companies try to introduce strategies, which are multi directional in nature. They conduct regular cross-functional interactive sessions for the night shift employees.

‘‘A special agenda for such session is formulated and team heads nominate representatives from each department. Such is not feasible for small-scale companies in terms of both time and money. Medium sized firms are better than small-scale firms, but need lot of improvement in their arrangements for women.’’
