DMK suspends senior leader Kalyanasundaram

Chennai, Aug 7 (IANS): The DMK Thursday suspended its organising secretary P.V. Kalyanasundaram for anti-party activities.

DMK general secretary K. Anbazhagan said Kalyanasundaram had been suspended for breaching party discipline and for bringing a bad name for the organisation.

The DMK appointed R.S. Bharathi in Kalyanasundaram's place.

The party's other organising secretary is its spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan.

The action against Kalyanasundaram comes after he tendered his resignation last month demanding that party treasurer M.K. Stalin be declared the chief ministerial candidate for the next election.

In addition, Kalyanasundaram, a close aide of Stalin, had also urged the party to remove Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi, Dayanidhi Maran and former union minister A. Raja from the party. Kanimozhi and Raja are accused in the telecom scam.

Stalin is the younger son of former chief minister and party president M. Karunanidhi. Kanimozhi is the daughter of Karunanidhi from his third wife Rajathi.

Dayanidhi Maran is a grand nephew of Karunanidhi.

The DMK earlier sacked Stalin's elder brother and former union minister M.K. Alagiri for anti-party activities.
