Arthritis awareness walk held in Delhi

New Delhi, Aug 3 (IANS): The Delhi Orthopaedic Association (DOA) organised a walk here Sunday to sensitise people about bone and joint health issues and ways to prevent arthritis.

Ahead of the Bone and Joint Day which falls Aug 4, the walk was held as part of Indian Orthopaedic Association's Bone and Joint Week (July 29 to Aug 4).

Flagged off from the Lodhi Garden, the walk included participants with weak bones and knee problems.

"This is an effort to advise people about the remedial steps to prevent development of preventable bone and joint disabilities so they remain healthy," said Jitender Maheshwari, senior consultant, orthopaedics at Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research and director, Knee and Shoulder Clinic.

"Bone loss is minimised by good nutritious diet and physical exercises. Early morning and evening sun exposure allows body to make vitamin D in the human body. These simple steps can improve health of bones and joints," he added.

According to DOA, 84 million Indians above the age of 65 years suffer from arthritis and osteoporosis (bone softening).

"Hence, special doctor-patient interactions were also held wherein problems related to arthritis and its solutions were shared," the DOA said.
