Indian women paddlers lose, face Australia for team bronze


Glasgow, July 27 (IANS): The Indian women's table tennis team failed to qualify for the summit clash in the Commonwealth Games as they lost their semi-final match 1-3 to defending champions Singapore at the Scotstoun Sports Campus here Saturday.

In the first singles, Tianwei Feng defeated Shamini Kumaresan 3-0 (11-1, 13-11, 11-5) but Manika Batra drubbed Mengyu Yu 3-2 (11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7) to level the tie at 1-all.

However, Ye Lin and Mengyu won the doubles clash defeating Madhurika Patkar and Shamini 3-0 (11-9, 11-7, 11-5) to take a 2-1 lead, which they extended in the next match when Ye beat Manika 3-1 (11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 11-5) to win the tie 3-1.

India, who won the silver four years ago at home, will take on Australia in the bronze medal playoff Sunday.

Earlier, India had beaten New Zealand 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

The Indian men's team will take on Scotland in the quarterfinal later in the day.
