Glasgow, July 24 (IANS): There was a tad bit disappointment for India from judo as both Shushila Likmabam and Navjot Chana settled for the silver after losing their respective final bouts in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) here Thursday.
Kalpana Thoudam won the bronze in the women's -52kg category as she beat Christianne Legentil of Mauritius. Christianne picked up three penalties while Thoudam had two.
But expectations were high from both Shushila and Chana after they put on a dominating show in their previous rounds. But unfortunately they performed miserably in the final.
Shushila picked up two shidos or penalties against Scottish girl Kimberley Renicks, who won the first gold medal for the hosts in the women's -48kg category. Kimberly finished off with an ippon as the indoor stadium burst into a thunderous applause.
Shushila's silver was the third medal for India and it was followed by another silver from Chana, who lost the final bout of the men's -60kg category to England's Ashley McKenzie.
The 30-year-old Chana was nowhere near his best during the final round. He picked up three penalties during the bout as McKenzie emerged the clear winner.
Enroute to his final, Chana, who is employed with Punjab Police, beat South African Daniel Le Grange in the semi-finals of the men's -60kg category while Shushila got the better of Australian Chloe Rayner in the semi-final of the women's -48kg category.
Shushila first beat Cameroon's Marie Medza Effa in the round of 16 and then got the better of Australian Amy Meyer in the quarterfinal.
Chana had beaten Brandon Dodge of Wales in the quarterfinal. Both Chana and Dodge suffered two penalties but the Indian got a ippon and waza-ari to make it to the semi-final. He also had a convincing win over 23-year-old Tom Pappas of Australia in the round of 16.
