Separate railway division: Will DVS fulfil Mangalore's dream?

Naveen Menezes
Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (NM)

Mangalore, May 28: With former chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda assuming charge as the minister of railways in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet, coupled with the election promise of MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, who again won the Lok Sabha elections from Dakshina Kannada constituency, the formation of a separate Mangalore railway division is likely to see green signal.

Presently, the Mangalore railway region functions under Palakkad division of Southern Railway Zone, which is headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It is a long-pending demand of the people of the port city to form a separate Mangalore railway division and bring it under South Western Railway Zone, which is headquartered in Hubli, Karnatala.

This was one of the promises made by the Dakshina Kannada unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in its election manifesto. Now, the handing over of railway ministry to D V Sadananda Gowda, who hails from the district, has boosted the hopes among the people of Mangalore. It has given double the reason as well as responsibility to BJP to fulfil its promise.

However, history has been witness to several ministers of Karnataka assuming the charge as union railway ministers including M Mallikarjun Kharge and K H Muniyappa, but the demand remains unfulfilled till date.

Sources said that the demands of the ministers were previously put on hold due to pressure by ministers of other states interested in the matter. It is said that the move to create a separate Mangalore division would not augur well for the Palakkad division since the freight revenues are mainly obtained from the Mangalore port. Hence, the demand has not seen the light of day. Now, the hopes have been rekindled with D V Sadananda Gowda taking up charge of the railway ministry and Nalin Kumar Kateel expected to deliver on his promise.

"With the establishment of Mangalore Railway division, there will be more facilities and benefits to the passengers and goods traffic. Moreover, it will also boost the economic and social development of Mangalore as well as the entire west coast. It will bring together the existing area of Mangalore Central, Mangalore Junction and New Mangalore Port and Konkan Railway jurisdiction," stated a letter previously sent by Oscar Fernandes to former railway minister Mallikarjuna Kharge urging to create a separate division.

Hanumant Kamath of Nagarika Hitarakshana Samiti of Mangalore said, "Mangalore railway faces stepmotherly treatment under Pallakkad division. This has to change on priority basis. Maillikarjuna Kharge made use of his ministry to create a separate Gulbarga railway division, which was also a similar long-pending demand. With Sadananda Gowda, a Mangalorean assuming the charge, he should focus on forming the Mangalore railway division. If he fails, we will protest by showing black flags when he comes to the city."

Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP of Dakshina Kannada constituency promised to take up this cause. Speaking to daijiworld on phone, he said, "Soon after D V Sadaganda Gowda took up the ministry, I congratulated him. I have put forth the need to create a separate Mangalore railway division. He has agreed to take up the issue on priority."

When contacted, Sadananda Gowda said that he would study the proposal in 15 days and then take appropriate action.

Other than Creating Mangalooru Division, More trains should ply between Bangalore - Mangalore VIA Hassana, Sakleshpura which helps Coastal people a lot interms of Money and tiredness.
In the similar manner, Hubli-Ankola and Chamarajanagara-Sathyamangala(TN), Thalaguppa-Honnavara routes should get green signal for overall development of Railways in Karnataka. Introduction of New trains from Hubli, Gulbarga to Mangalooru should be done.

So for DVS not done or contributed any major things to coastal except criticizing others…

Let see, how he proves himself by making following things –

    1. Mangalore a separate division / merge with Konkan Railway.
    2. Give permanent halt to all Kerala bound trains in major stations like Suratkal, Udupi, Kundapura, Byndoor, Bhatkal, Kumta & Karvar. Uplift the facilities in these stations.
    3. Increase each stations reservation quota and introduce PSL/PSQL etc.
    4. Dual tracks for Konkan routes.
    5. Reducing travel time & increase frequency of Bangalore-Karvar

    Best of Luck !!!

The ministries are not loose to do anything as before. Modi has issued a directive that all policy has to be approved by the PMO. Thus Gowda cannot do as he pleases and his efficiency and performance will be closely monitored. The days of ministers running loose are over and the PMO will exercise stringent oversight.

Since the Mallu lobby seems to have considerably weakened after the recent Lok Sabha elections, it should be easier for Mr. DVS to create a separate Mangalore Division, with full backing from Mr. N.K. Kateel, the Rail Yathri Sangha and the general public of DK & Udupi. It’s good to see that there are no Keralites in the present cabinet who had always hindered development, especially in the transport sector, in coastal Karnataka.

Mangalore Zone generates revenue from goods transportation to and fro Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli and other parts of Karnataka. This revenue goes to neighboring state. What an apathy..!

Division should be created under SWR-Hubli, definitely not under Konkan Railway. In Konkan Railway there are more outside people. So it will not benefit us.

Kharge tried to create. But Kerala CM approached PM with their MPs to this. Finally Karnataka congis became slave of Kerala Congis. What a shame..

Gowda's wife is from Kodagu. So, will he try to take up new Railway line from Puttur (through Sullia) to Madikeri and then connect further to Kushalnagar-Mysore ??
Keralites can be placated with Mysore - Manandwadi route which will be shortest route to Kerala from Bangalore, and it is already under Survey.

SAI mangalore - Probably you do not know that long back the proposal of Mangalore-Puttur-Sullia-Madikeri-Mysore route was mooted when Punachha was Railway Minister (1967-69) who was the true son of Coorg. This is still on papers, but it will surely materialize if DVS shows strong will to push it.
Three years back when Dinesh Trivedi was Railway minister even the Survey of Mysore-Khushalnagar 70 km section was undertaken and Kushalnagar-Madikeri ( 60 km) survey is still pending due to official apathy. If this section can materialize then why the remaining 90 km from Madikeri to Puttur cannot be taken up ? From Puttur to Mangalore already old line exists.

First you have to help those people who's land acquired by railways past years....no roads to cross their own property....no roads (mud road)since 1947 ....now is the best time Mangalore MP to raise these issue to DVS about this....help those people struggling for proper infra.....example: Niddle road, near bridge crossing, only a 1 km road to be done by tarmac & Padil underpass bridge as well as pedestrian crossing pathway.

    Dear Prem

Udupi& D.K both cities are shapa-grastha cities bcz if they develop these 2 cities then it ll beat the Blore then north Karnataka fully neglected for this reason all the minister from north are always bring the factory here because if factories ll come the IT companies are not entre the city bcz it create the huge health problem. And our elected MP and MLA are only bluffing from last 10 years ,u c this time also same thing ll happen. We should go to blore for work .D.K and Udupi students are scoring high marks and literacy ratio also more than 95% but there no proper companies are there to work. Hope this time change ll happen.
