EU to observe elections in Egypt

Brussels, May 1 (IANS): The European Union (EU) Wednesday said it had deployed an election observation mission (EOM) to Egypt for its presidential elections scheduled May 26-27, in response to an invitation by local authorities.

The EU said in a statement that it had been calling for credible and transparent elections in Egypt, allowing for universal participation and carried out according to international standards, Xinhua reported.

The EOM works as an independent body that conducts impartial assessment of the electoral process on the basis of all relevant elections' standards, the statement added.

The mission will issue a preliminary statement shortly after Egypt's election day, and a final report a few weeks after its results are published.
