Jordanian envoy kidnapped in Libya

Tripoli, April 15 (IANS): Unidentified gunmen kidnapped Jordan's ambassador to Libya here Tuesday morning, a Libyan government spokesperson said.

The masked gunmen, driving two cars without number plates, attacked ambassador Fawaz al-Etan and his driver, Xinhua quoted Said al-Aswad, a spokesperson for the Libyan foreign ministry as saying.

The gunmen, the official said, opened fire on the car and abducted the ambassador.

The ambassador's driver was hit by two bullets and was hospitalised, he added.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Libya has been plagued with kidnappings and robberies since the downfall of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, and the interim government has not established effective control in the North African country.
