Beltangady: Generous family that helps others now in dire need of home

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (SHS/SP)

Beltangady, Apr 13: Here is a family that has been serving the needy in spite of finding it difficult to make both ends meet. Humble members of this rare family are Margaret, Celina, Reeta, and their mother.

Recently their condition worsened, with heavy rains further damaging the house that was built about two decades ago.

Of the four, Margaret is married. Her husband works in Bangalore. The couple has a two-year-old daughter. Reeta is a first year BCA degree course student at SDM College, Ujire. Reeta is a brilliant student, a topper in her class. Celina is a nun in Dominican order. Margaret’s father was an alcoholic, who deserted them when they were badly in need of his support, leaving them to fend for themselves.

In spite of the poor financial condition of the family, Margaret generously provides herbal remedies for patients suffering from kidney stone ailment, free of cost. Margaret is running the family, in addition to taking care of educational needs of her younger sister, with great difficulty. As the family has no male member to fall back on, Margaret’s husband has been extending support to the family to the extent possible, from out of his moderate salary.

Margaret's husband works as a small-time sales man in Bangalore earning a meagre salary of Rs 7,000. Out of this money, apart from his day-to-do expenses for food and other necessities, he also has to pay rent for his accomodation in Bangalore. The remaining amount is hardly enough to sustain the family in Beltangady.

"My husband was earlier sending money and looking after our day-to-day expenses and also my sister’s education. He now earns less and is unable to save enough for the family," Margaret says, requesting for help to repair the house her family stays in.

The family’s house is in dilapidated condition. It is in such a state of disrepair that it might crash anytime. The rain that lashed a few days ago has further damaged the house. Part of the roof has come off and another portion was destroyed when a tree got uprooted and fell on the house. They do not even have sufficient water supply.

Though the family has tried to sustain itself by growing rubber near the house, it is not yet ready for tapping. Hence all sources of income are as good as closed. "I give people herbal medicines for kidney stones but do not charge them. Charging money would weaken the power of the medicine," says Margaret. Her mother Mary has undergone uterus operations, which deters her from doing any heavy work.

The family requires financial assistance to build a small home for itself. Construction of a small 600 sq ft house will require about Rs 3,50,000.

Those who wish to help the family and bring them out of their misery are requested to send in their contributions to the following account:

Margaret Mathais
SB Account No: 105701011000406
Vijaya Bank, Dharmasthala Branch
Beltangady taluk
Dakshina Kannada district, India.

IFSC No: VIJB0001057

Indeed we will help them. I note this family used to help others and now they are in trouble. Very sad. Ungrateful society who takes help in their both folded hands, but when its their turn to help they show their back and show a empty hand. Hope many will help this family .They deserve our help

Thanks Daijiworld for this call to help. All the comments out there are very encouraging one and we need to support this family. I am amused to see how people can dislike a comment concerning such a noble cause !, what kind of person he or she may be ?, what if, let the person who had disliked the comments or may not liked the appeal would have been in this situation like this family is in ?. Pathetic and shame on them, I say to them beware! God is watching you.

Dear Alexander P menezes karkala/dubai. well said to sachindananda shetty. please note that 99.9% here commenting on any issue are not hardliners in either way. The argument happens as there is a difference of opinion on the definition of secularism with 2 groups. Otherwise, all of us are humans and like to help each other as we have been doing for thousands of years. Above that all of us have at least 1 best friend in our personal life who is from another religion. Right?

    " feeling sad "

As i remember, Once upon a time our church fathers use to Visit all the Parishioners’ house, and then all the comity members [ as you know all of you ]use to collect the fund and church fathers use to help these poor and needy people.
But nowadays, our poor brothers and sisters need to solve their [OUR ] problems with the help of "Daijiworld ".

Thanks to Daijiworld, please keep it up.

I would have added the religious heads too to the list of individuals you have pointed out. Never mind - Bharat Ratna Shri Vishweshwarayya said, Hani koodi Halla, Thene koodi Khanaja.

Lets be the sand grains and be there for there for the poor family - God will be there for all of us.

    Dear Sachidananda Shetty,
As you rightly opined, I gave you a like to make the total of likes to your comment to 200. I am glad to hear this comment coming from you. At times I feel that you are too much into Hidutva and you hate other religions. But At times like this, I come to know the real of you. I am sure with like minded people like you in this forum, we will be able to pitch up to this task and help this poor family and become the real heroes in front of our Lord. Thank you for your kind words towards this distressed family.

Thank you friends for your kind gestures, I didn’t realize that my comment will touch so many of our friends. As a token of gesture I did my little contribution of Rs 5,000/- today. After all, we are all humans and we need to contribute something to this society to those who are really in need of it. Normally my wife advises me to contribute whenever she sees some article in “Udayavani” which we read daily. This is the lesson I have learned from someone who paid my hostel bill for one full term when I was in dire need of money during my Article Ship. When I went back to pay this amount, he firmly told me that “This money is not for payback instead you need to forward to those who are in need of it”
