Hyderabad, Aug 18: A tragic mishap during Sri Krishnashtami celebrations claimed five lives and left four others injured after a Rath came in contact with a high-tension wire in Gokulnagar, Ramanthapur, late Sunday night.

The Rath, which was being carried manually after the transport vehicle broke down, accidentally touched an overhead electric line, throwing the participants off due to the powerful shock. Panic gripped the crowd as people ran for safety.

The injured were rushed to a private hospital where doctors declared five persons dead. The deceased have been identified as Krishna (21), Rudra Vikas (39), Rajendra Reddy (45), Srikant Reddy (35) and Suresh Yadav (34). Four others, including Union minister G Kishan Reddy’s gunman Srinivas, were admitted with injuries.

The bodies have been shifted to Gandhi Hospital, Secunderabad. Leaders across party lines expressed grief and demanded compensation for the bereaved families and proper medical care for the injured.

In a separate incident, a clash broke out between two youth groups during Krishnashtami celebrations in Kukatpally, leaving one person injured. Police suspect old rivalry behind the fight and have registered a case.
