Golfers Vani, Ankita in tied lead

Gurgaon, March 12 (IANS): Vani Kapoor shared Day 1 honours with fellow Delhi golfer Ankita Tiwana after Round 1 of the fifth leg of the Women’s Professional Golf Tour being held at the Classic Golf Resort here Wednesday.

The Delhi girls are two under 70, finishing tied first, one shot clear of Shweta Galande and Vaishavi Sinha, who are tied third with identical scores of one under 71.

Vani, who has been in sublime form this season, was her consistent self, carding three birdies on the third, 12th and 13th holes as opposed to a solitary bogey on the 18th hole.

Ankita also had an immaculate round as she carded three birdies on the ninth, 11th and 13th holes, and like Vani, conceded just a single bogey on the seventh hole.

Shweta carded four birdies on the first, second, fifth and 18th holes and had bogeys on the seventh, 13th and 15th holes to finish with an impressive score of one under 71. Vaishavi carded three birdies on the 12th, 15th and 16th holes and conceded two bogeys on the fourth and 10th holes.

Saaniya Sharma also had a good outing and carded six birdies, the most by any player, to end at fifth with a par score of 72. However, she would be disappointed at conceding six bogeys. Nikki Ponappa is placed sixth with a score of two over 74.

The Rs.5 lakh event is the fifth in the series of 14 this year.
