Preview

Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal vowed his team would come back hard at Pakistan in the second Twenty20 International in Dubai to keep their world number one ranking intact. Pakistan edged out Sri Lanka by three wickets in a thrilling last-over finish in the first match on Wednesday. If Pakistan, currently fourth, win this game, they will displace Sri Lanka as number one team in the T20I rankings.

Sent into bat, Sri Lanka rode on a brilliant 34-ball 50 by Angelo Mathews to post a competitive total of 145/5 in the opening T20I. Pakistan managed to chase down the target off the first ball of the 20th over with Shahid Afridi hitting a fiery 20-ball 39 not out. Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis conceded 29 runs in his four overs while Sachitra Senanayake finished with 1-13 in his three.

The experienced pair of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara did not contribute much with the bat in the first match and the onus will be on them to perform in this game. Kusal Perera and Chandimal too got out cheaply and they will be hoping to make amends. Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne, who put on quick-fire fifty run stand for the 5th wicket, were the ones who enabled Sri Lanka post a total of some respectability. Sri Lanka will be hoping that they deliver again if they come out to bat.

While Lasith Malinga, Senanayake and Mendis did a good job with the ball, they were not supported by the likes of Nuwan Kulasekara, Mathews and Thisara Perera, who finished with expensive returns. The Lankans will be hoping that they can bowl with better discipline in this game and help Sri Lanka cling on to their top spot in the ICC T20I rankings.

Sharjeel Khan and Mohammad Hafeez got Pakistan off to a good start but the hosts lost wickets in a heap during the middle overs before Afridi stood till the end to help his side past the line. Ahmed Shehzad, Umar Akmal, Sohaib Maqsood and Umar Amin are all talented batsmen, but Pakistan will be hoping that they do justice to their selections and come up with useful contributions with the bat.

They inducted 19-year-old paceman Usman Khan in the eleven, but the left-armer was erratic and bowled only one over. Bilawal Bhatti turned out to be expensive while Sohail Tanvir and Saeed Ajmal, despite picking up wickets, went at more than 8 an over. Hafeez and Afridi were the ones who kept things tight and they will be hoping for the rest of the bowlers to also do a tidy job. Skipper Hafeez, who was pleased with the win, said that Pakistan have been trying some new players ahead of World Twenty20 in Bangladesh in March-April next year. He will be hoping that they come up with a good showing and help Pakistan top the T20I rankings.
