Bantwal, Apr 19: In a shocking incident during a courtroom trial, an undertrial reportedly flung his footwear in the additional civil court at B C Road-Jodumarga here on Tuesday.

The undertrial, Purushottam (46) of Kumbla in Kasargod, has been facing charges of theft and the trial was on. When he was told to provide surety for bail for a previous charge againt him, he is said to have lost his cool and picked up his footwear and aimed it at the magistrate. As he was trying to do it again with the other footwear, he was stopped by lawyers around.

Feeling pitiably sorry for his offence, Purushuttam is said to have apologized to the judicial officer the soon after. The magistrate, Palleda Ravindra, slapped a token fine of Rs 200, failing to pay which he would have to undergo simple imprisonment for a month.

Although hailing from Kumbla, he was reportedly working as a quarry worker in the neighbouring Pavoor a year and eight months ago. While he had come to watch a movie in BC Road and was sleeping in a petrol pump late in the night, the police had arrested him on suspicion. He had been questioned in connection with a theft that took place here around that time.

The man was also accused in cases of some thefts that took place in other parts of the district.

An advocate, on condition of anonymity, told Daijiworld that the man could be innocent and might have been irritated by the trial going on against him for long.
