Mangalore, Apr 4: A historic event, the civic reception to Prof Rolphie Mascarenhas will go down the pages of history by being the first-of-its-kind honour accorded to any teacher on his retirement at St Aloysius College.

The students, friends and well-wishers of Prof Rolphie organized the programme on the occasion of the superannuation of this great teacher who has touched thousands of minds and hearts, but has reached out to over a lac people through his training programmes.

The programme, which was held on Monday April 3, 2006 in the Eric Mathias Hall, IT Block, St Aloysius College was presided over by Bishop of Mangalore Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza. Speaking on the occasion, he said that Prof Rolphie belonged to that category of people who travelled the road less travelled. “It is not doing creative things, but doing things creatively," said the Bishop, adding that the good work done by Prof Rolphie must continue.

Fr Francis Serrao SJ, Rector, St Aloysius Institutions, U K Monu, Chairman, Kanachur Academy and Blasius M D’Souza MLC were the chief guests.

Prof Hayavadana Upadyaya, president, Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (AMUCT), Fr Francis Serrao, U K Monu and Blasius M D’Souza spoke on the personality and work of Prof Rolphie.


The day was also momentous as two new awards were announced. The Late Benjamin D’Souza Memorial award was instituted which will be given away annually to a student who excels in sports. An award to the student who scores the highest marks in BA (political science was also instituted in the name of Prof Rolphie.


An LCD presentation on the life and contributions of Prof Rolphie, made by Prof John Sherra and Prof Ronald Nazareth, was screened on the occasion.
