Mangalore, Mar 6: A serious lack of in-depth knowledge, research on issues of concern and lack of novel thinking among the youngsters entering the journalism profession is visible. This calls for introspection with regard to their value system in the society in view of the changing environs, said chairman of Karnataka Media Academy and veteran journalist V N Subba Rao.

He was speaking after inaugurating a one-day workshop on writing for media 'Mediascape', organised jointly by the Mangalore-Manipal chapter of Public Relations Society of India and the Communication Club of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Mangalore University held at Sahodaya in the city on Sunday March 5.

There is immense scope for talented youngsters, especially in the electronic media and that they should equip technical skills to reach the zenith, said Rao.

In the past three decades or so, the print and electronic media had witnessed tremendous changes, both in terms of technology as well as the writing styles with stiff competition among media houses. As journalist must enhance his professionalism, skills and hard work so as to be successful, he added.

"Youth want to take up media, more specifically the electronic media as TV anchors and news readers merely looking at the glamour. Youngsters should work hard, instead of getting carried away by the glamour to become successful," Rao said.

Lions International president Ashok Mehta who was the chief guest on the occasion highlighted the role of media in achieving desired goals of service organisations in their efforts to serve the society at large.

Chairman of PRSI, B R Bhat who presided over the programme said that the challenges are growing in the media field and journalists should keep abreast with the changing times through frequent retooling and orientation.

Chairman of Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Mangalore University, G P Shivaram, vice-chairman of PRSI Sudhir P Ghate were present on the occasion.

In his presidential address, PRSI chairman B R Bhat spoke on the importance of the workshop and also spoke on the competition among the media.
Lions Club International president Ashok Mehta, PRSI vice-president Sudhir P Ghate, secretary Ramesh Vaidya and MCJ chairman G P Shivram were also present on the occasion.
