Violence after UP road accident

Lucknow, Sep 10 (IANS): Violence broke out Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh after a truck ran over a youth following which villagers blocked a highway and pelted stones, forcing police to fire in the air and cane protestors, an official said. At least 12 people were injured.

Avdhesh was run over on the Kanpur highway near Ekdil in Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's home district Etawah, police said.

After the road-death, irate villagers came out on to the highway and torched the truck and pelted stones at passersby, police said.

At least a dozen people, including six policemen, were injured in the stone pelting by villagers before police cane-charged and fired in the air to contain the mob, police said.

The Etawah-Kanpur highway was later opened for motorists.

"We controlled the situation after an hour and the jam has been cleared," Deputy Inspector General of Police, Kanpur, R.K. Chaturvedi told IANS.
