Kozhikode (Kerala), Aug 26 (IANS): A probe has been ordered into the case of a 17-year-old Kerala girl allegedly misled into "marrying" a UAE national who deserted her and returned to his country within 13 days, a rights panel member said here Monday.

State Human Rights Commission member K.E. Gangadharan told reporters: "The director general of police and the state social welfare board have been asked to find out what has happened and give a report on how a foreign national could enter into a marriage."

The Class 12 girl alleged that she "married" the UAE national June 13 in Kozhikode district.

Soon after meeting the victim and her mother, Gangadharan said: "Such a thing should not have happened because it appears the girl and her mother were misled by someone."

The girl alleged that she married the UAE national under pressure from a Yateem Khana (Muslim orphanage) that helped in her upbringing after her father's death.

After their marriage, they spent time in resorts in and around this district and later her "husband" suddenly left the country, the girl alleged.

Police investigations revealed that the UAE national's father was also an Arab but his mother was a Keralite, who lives in the district.

S. Fatima, the president of the women's wing of the Muslim students federation said that the role of the orphanage needed to be probed.

"The need of the hour is to probe if the girl and the family was briefed of the marriage by the orphanage authorities. Such things should not happen," said Fatima.
