Udupi, Feb 8: A sudden fire at Adve near Padubidri here destroyed a large wooded area and plain land on Tuesday February 7 afternoon.  However, the fire brigade and locals prevented the fire from spreading to the nearby 5 cents colony.

The dry grass and foliage near the Adve road caught fire on Tuesday afternoon, which soon spread through the entire region.  As a result the trees on the nearby hillock and woods spread across several acres of land were gutted.

Though the fire brigade arrived in time, it could not get to the spot since there was no road to take their vehicles. Then it was largely owing to the help of locals that the fire brought under control by 6 in the evening.  However, by the time the fire was brought under control, trees spread across several acres of land had perished.

So far the loss has not been estimated.  But the locals and eyewitness were of the opinion that loss may amount to huge price since some of the valuables trees too were reduced to ashes.
