Sullia, Jan 31: A group of thieves, thought to be comprising 6-7 members,  broke into several houses in the Battadka and Kombar areas near Subrahmanya here in the small hours of Monday January 30 and decamped with ornaments and cash worth several thousands.

The thieves first broke into one Kusumavati's house at Manibanda of Shiribagilu near Kombar and snatched gold bangle from her hand before picking her purse, which had Rs 15,208 in cash in it.  The thieves also stole her cell phone and decamped.  Kusumavati is a teacher by profession.  Her wedding was due to take place on Thursday February 2.

The miscreants had gained entry into the house through the door which was already open, the police said.  Kusumavati was sleeping alone in a room while the other family members were asleep in another room when the incident happened.  The thieves threatened her against raising an alarrm before fleeing.

Having fled from Kusumavati's house, the thieves entered one Manku Mogera's house at Battadka, which is 3 kilometres away from Kusumavati's house.  Here, the thieves are said to have carried the suitcase contained ornaments and cash.  After emptying thesuitcase, they have dumped it in a bush by the hillock.

Earlier the same group is said to have tried to steal a whet-stone in one Divakar Bhandari's house at 11 pm on Sunday January 29.  However, the family members came out when they heard the noise outside.  The thieves fled the place without laying their hands on any valuables there.

But the interesting part of the episode is that, the thieves broke into one Nityanand Kutoor' s house after completing theft at Kusumavati’s house.  Here they entered the kitchen and brought out the cooking vessels.  Thereafter, all of them had their food for the night there with rice and curry.  But when they were about to keep the vessels back in the kitchen, the housemaid heard the noise and got up.  Being frightened, she woke up the house owners.  But they in turn scolded her saying that she might have had bad dream and ordered her to sleep.  In the meantime, the thieves fled the place.  It was only in the morning that the family members came to know about it, when they saw the empty cooking vessels lying in the verandah.

The same group then proceeded to one Balakrishna's house at Mugermane and pulled out one of his trousers, which was hanging inside on a rope from the window.  But they could not get anything in it.  Though there was a salary cheque in the name of Balakrishna, the thieves have not taken it.  Balakrishna is a teacher at Bilinele high school.

The locals are now of the opinion that, the thieves could be from the same area as they knew that there would be ornaments in Kusumavati's house on view of her wedding.  But right now there are now clues about the group of thieves.

The Sullia police have registered the case in this regard.
