Mangalore, Jan 30: Noted Tulu and Kannada playwright Ullal Ram Chander (79) passed away on Sunday January 29 night after a brief illness.

UP Chander was senior level officer in Life Insurance Corporation (LIC).  Even while working for LIC, he always found time to write some fine plays in Tulu.  However, after his retirement, he committed himself entirely to writing Tulu plays.

Some of his plays like "Ponnana Jeevana" (Life of a Woman), "Mannada Bajana" (Earthen Vessels), "Bharati", "Vande Mataram" etc have become very popular.  He has written more than 50 plays both in Kannada and Tulu languages.  His plays "Kordabbu Tannimaniga" and "Kallurti Kalkuda" have been staged more than a thousand times.

He had won the prestigious 'Taulava Award' given by Karnataka Nataka Academy.  Many prominent playwrights and Tulu theatre personalities have condoled his death.
