Trezeguet joins Argentina's Newell's Old Boys

Buenos Aires, Jul 23 (IANS): French football player David Trezeguet has joined Argentine club Newell's Old Boys, where he will serve as a reinforcement.

The 35-year-old forward will fill the vacancy left by Ignacio Scocco, scorer in the Closing Tournament won by Newell's, who was transferred to Brazil's Internacional team in the city of Porto Alegre, reports Xinhua.

Trezeguet, a champion in the 1998 France World Cup, comes to Newell's from River Plate after team's coach, Ramon Diaz, suddenly dropped the player from his lineup.

"It's a special day for me, because it gives me great satisfaction to come full circle, since a month ago River informed me I was not going to be part of their project and a month later I sign on with the current (league) champion," said Trezeguet.

Speaking at a press conference Monday at Newell's headquarters in Rosario, 300 km from the capital Buenos Aires, Trezeguet stressed that "this institution has commanded great respect for the way it plays football, and for the way it does things, it showed it is up to the task."

Trezeguet said he was excited to be playing in the Copa Libertadores and about the possibility of arriving at "the 300 goal mark" in his professional career.

Born in France's northwestern city of Rouen, Trezeguet has signed a one-year lending contract and will now strive to be in top form, since undergoing surgery on his injured left knee April 15.
